ARRIVAL & TRANSFER TO HOTEL

Arrive at Kigali International Airport and meet up with the driver guide representing Gentle Giants who will be waiting for you. With a wide smile, he/she will warmly welcome you to beautiful Rwanda for your 9 Days wildlife safari. Meet, greet, and introduce yourselves to each other. You will then go through the itinerary together giving you highlights on what to expect on this 9-day safari, what to do, and when. After this, you will be transferred to your preferred hotel in Kigali for refreshment and overnight.

Following morning breakfast, get your bags and hit the road transferring to Akagera National Park, home to the big five game. The drive from Kigali to Akagera is roughly 3 hours. Check into the lodge, refresh, and have lunch. You will then go for an evening game safari to see wild animals actively hunting and grazing in the open savannas before retiring for night’s rest.  Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Very early today, transfer to the open plains of Akagera National Park for guided game drives.  Follow different tracks in the park which offer you scenic views of different wild animals feeding, resting, and socializing. You will see numerous wild animals such as Lions, Leopards, Giraffes, Zebras, Elephants, hippos, Buffalos, Topis, Elands, cheetahs, Rhinos, Waterbucks, Warthogs, Wild pigs, and many more. Return to the lodge for a late breakfast and chill as you wait for a hot lunch. In the afternoon, go for a boat cruise at Lake Ihema whose shires shelter numerous wild water animals and birds.  The boat cruise offers you a fresh feeling of a cold breeze and also spectacular views of the park and wildlife.

After a relaxed breakfast, go for a city tour in Kigali to visit some top travel destinations in the city center.  Among the popular places to visit are the Kigali Convention Centre, Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, Kimironko Market, Mount Kigali, and Inema Art Gallery among others. You will then drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park with lunch en route.  Overnight stay at your lodge.

Start this day by transferring to Uwinka Visitor Information Centre to prepare for the chimpanzee trekking adventure. You will be registered and briefed on what to expect on this adventure, and the dos and don’ts during chimpanzee trekking. Trekking in Nyungwe Forest can either be done in the main Forest or Cyamudongo Forest.   The experience of trekking in either place is magical and worth doing. In addition to chimpanzees, Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to other 12 primates which include Vervet monkeys, Colobus monkeys, Baboons, Blue Monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, Olive baboons, L’ hoest monkeys, grey-cheeked Mangabey and Black and white Colobus monkeys.  You may encounter these primates during your search for the chimpanzees. In the afternoon, join a canopy walk for another experimental experience. The walk offers you aerial views of Nyungwe Forest, chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and other attractions in the neighborhood.  Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Following breakfast, check out and transfer to Lake Kivu located on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Upon arrival, check into the lodge and refresh. You will then embark on the boat cruise to explore the different islands of Lake Kivu. The lake is the largest freshwater body in Kivu, the main source of Fish for Rwanda and Congo. Also, Lake Kivu has boiling methane gas that bills from underneath. The boat cruise offers you scenic views of the Virunga mountains, local communities and farmlands not forgetting the cold breeze and fresh air. Other activities done at Lake Kivu include sunbathing, swimming, nature walking, and photography. You can take part in any of these activities if you wish.  Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Having explored Lake Kivu and all it offers, it’s now time to transfer to Volcanoes National Park. You can have an optional morning boat cruise if you wish. Thereafter, check out and drive northwestwards headed to Volcanoes Pak, home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Dinner and overnight at the lodge

Very early today, wake up for a cup of coffee at your lodge and with a packed lunch drive to Kinigi, the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park to get prepared for the adventurous gorilla trekking experience. You will be registered and briefed on the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking to ensure a peaceful encounter. At 8:00 am start up the hike up and downhill through the bamboo forests searching for the allocated gorilla family. The hike can be as short as 30 minutes to over 7 hours depending on the location of gorillas and the hiking speed of the slowest person in your group.  After meeting the gorillas, you will be allowed an hour with them! Make use of this hour properly to take memorable pictures, capture live videos, and enjoy this magical encounter. On a good day, you may encounter other wild animals and birds that live in this bamboo forest. After an hour with gorillas, hike back to meet your driver guide and transfer to the lodge. Dinner and overnight at your lodge

The day starts with an early breakfast and transfers to Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi. After registration and briefing, start the hike into the jungle searching for the endangered golden monkeys. You will be amazed by the playful and cheerful characters of golden monkeys. They play continuously in your presence without any fear!  Return to the lodge for refreshments and in the evening go for a cultural tour of the Gorilla Guardian Village, the former Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village. The cultural tour introduces you to the traditions, norms, customs, and beliefs of local people. You will learn different cultural practices such as traditional wear, preparing; local foods, brewing local beers, and grinding millet among others. Interact with local people who share their daily lifestyles.

Have a relaxed morning breakfast, check out, and transfer to Kigali International Airport to catch up with your departure flight.

What to To Think About On This Tour

Gorilla & Chimpanzee tracking is subject to the availability of permits, which are limited to 8 per gorilla group per day and 6 per chimpanzee track per ½ day.

Any Gorilla and Chimpanzee permits required need to be paid for upfront when booking. As soon as funds clear in our account, we will go ahead and purchase.  

Gorilla and Chimpanzee permits are always 100% non-transferable and non-refundable

The RATES are subject to change and are based on Availability with effect from July upon release of the new tariffs from Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rwanda Development Board.

On flights and land-based tours within East Africa, each passenger is limited to a maximum baggage weight of 33 pounds (15 kilograms). This includes the weight of purses and camera equipment in addition to regular luggage. Luggage restrictions are adhered to very strictly and passengers should pack their bags accordingly. Soft-sided luggage or duffels are preferable to hard luggage for storage on safari vehicles and also on aircraft used throughout East Africa. Dimensions should not exceed 23 inches (58 centimetres) long x 13 inches (33 centimetres) high x 10 inches (25 centimetres) wide.
