Discover Rwanda primates by taking part in this customized 5-day Rwanda primates safari with Gentle Giants Safaris. The 5-day safari takes you to Rwanda’s top primate destinations which are Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park.  Enjoy a face-to-face encounter with the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes Park located in northwestern Rwanda. Talking about gorillas, volcanoes National Park shelters the highest gorilla population in the whole of the Virunga Conservation Area and it is bordered by Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Virunga National Park in Congo.  Over 400 mountain gorillas are believed to be dwelling in Volcanoes National Park and have been habituated into 10 gorilla families. In addition to gorillas, Volcanoes National park is home to the endangered and playful golden monkeys. Volcanoes Park also shelters two extinct Volcanoes ie Mount Karisimbi (the highest volcano in Virunga Massif) and Mount Bisoke which offers travelers memorable volcano climbing experiences.

The 5 days Rwanda primates’ safari also includes trekking the endangered chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest National Park located in southwestern Rwanda. Nyungwe Forest also harbors numerous monkey species and birds which you will see. Still in Nyungwe Forest, enjoy the adventurous canopy walk which offers great aerial views of Nyungwe Forest, volcano mountains, and local communities in the neighborhood.  Chimpanzees and mountain gorillas have over 98%of human DNA which makes them man's close relatives.

You will also explore Kigali, the cleanest and most organized city in Africa.  Combining gorillas, chimpanzees, Golden monkeys, and a city tour offers you the best of Rwanda safari.

Detailed Itinerary
ARRIVAL DAY

Arrive at Kigali International Airport where you will find the driver guide representing Gentle Giants Safaris waiting for you.  He/she will warmly welcome you to the land of a thousand hills, he will then briefly take you through the itinerary introducing you to what you should expect on this 5 day Rwanda safari. You will then drive to your preferred hotel for refreshment, dinner, and overnight.

This is the first day of our 5 days Rwanda safari. Wake up early on a tasty breakfast, check out, and go for a city tour in Kigali’ the capital of Rwanda.  Some of the tourist destinations to visit in Kigali include Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre and Kimironko Market. You can also have an optional visit to the Kigali Convention Center, Inema Art Gallery, and the former presidential palace among others. You will then drive southwestwards to Nyungwe Forest National Park with en route lunch. Arrive in the evening and chill at your lodge as you wait for dinner and overnight.

Today you will wake up very early, have breakfast, and with your packed lunch transfer to the headquarters of Nyungwe Forest National Park. Register with the park wardens who will also brief you on the rules and regulations of chimpanzee trekking.  You will be assigned a chimpanzee community to trek and two armed park rangers to escort you to and from the jungle. At 8:00 am, start the hike into the jungle forest searching for the endangered chimpanzees. You can either trek in the main Nyungwe Forest or Cyamudongo Forest. The loud shouts and laughs of chimpanzees heard from a distance give you directions on which track to follow. You may also encounter other primates and colobus monkeys that live in this forest on your search for the chimpanzees. Trekking time lasts for between 2-6 hours! On meeting the chimpanzees, you will be allowed to spend an hour in their presence. Return to the lodge for refreshment and in the afternoon go for the adventure canopy walk which offers you great views of the forest, Virunga Volcanoes, and the rolling hills of Rwanda.  Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Today is for transferring to Volcanoes National Park. Have a relaxed morning breakfast check out and start the drive headed northwest to Volcanoes Park. Enjoy the scenic drive by the beautiful Lake Kivu, tea farms, banana plantations, and homesteads.  Have lunch en route and proceed to Volcanoes Park arriving in the afternoon. Spend the rest of the day chilling at your lodge as you wait for the next day’s adventure. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

You are expected to be at Kinigi Park headquarters by 7:00 am for registration and briefing. Ensure to wake up very early for a heavy breakfast at your lodge. You will also be given a packed lunch since the trekking time is not certain. Together with the other seven travelers, you will be allocated one gorilla family to visit. The trek to meet the endangered gorillas starts at 8:00 am and can be as short as 30 minutes to over 7 hours. Gorilla trekking time is determined by the location of the gorillas and the hiking speed of travelers in your group. The allowed time with the endangered gorillas is strictly an hour counted from the moment you see them.  Volcanoes National Park also shelters other animals such as Forest Elephants, golden monkeys, and colobus monkeys which you may encounter on your gorilla search.  After a magical encounter with the gorillas, hike down and drive back to our lodge for refreshment, In the evening go for a cultural tour to the Gorilla Guardian Village where you will learn and experience the traditions, norms, customs, and practices of local people. Get a chance to meet and interact with local people who share their daily lifestyle.  Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Following an early morning breakfast go back to Kinigi Park headquarters to get ready for the thrilling golden monkey trekking experience. The proceedings of the day are similar to those of the previous day. Start with registration and a brief guide on the dos and don’ts of golden monkey trekking. You will then hike into the jungle to search for these lively primates. Enjoy the company of these playful creatures who continuously jump across tree branches above your head.  The allowed time is also an hour. You will then transfer to your hotel, refresh check out, and drive to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.

What to To Think About On This Tour

Gorilla & Chimpanzee tracking is subject to the availability of permits, which are limited to 8 per gorilla group per day and 6 per chimpanzee track per ½ day.

Any Gorilla and Chimpanzee permits required need to be paid for upfront when booking. As soon as funds clear in our account, we will go ahead and purchase.  

Gorilla and Chimpanzee permits are always 100% non-transferable and non-refundable

The RATES are subject to change and are based on Availability with effect from July upon release of the new tariffs from Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rwanda Development Board.

On flights and land-based tours within East Africa, each passenger is limited to a maximum baggage weight of 33 pounds (15 kilograms). This includes the weight of purses and camera equipment in addition to regular luggage. Luggage restrictions are adhered to very strictly and passengers should pack their bags accordingly. Soft-sided luggage or duffels are preferable to hard luggage for storage on safari vehicles and also on aircraft used throughout East Africa. Dimensions should not exceed 23 inches (58 centimetres) long x 13 inches (33 centimetres) high x 10 inches (25 centimetres) wide.
